Crowns Q & A

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are caps that surround an existing tooth or attach to dental implants. Crowns usually cover teeth damaged by trauma or tooth decay. They protect and strengthen cracked teeth, teeth in danger of breaking, or teeth weakened by excessively large fillings.

However, you can also request dental crowns to cover discolored or misshapen teeth for an enhanced smile.

What are crowns made from?

Dr. Barrera and the team at Arbours Aesthetic Dentistry offer three dental crown compositions:

All-metal crowns are strong and hold up to aggressive chewing and biting. However, they’re quite noticeable. For this reason, they work best for back molars.

Ceramic on metal

Ceramic on metal crowns offer both the durability of metal crowns and the natural look of ceramic crowns.

Dr. Barrera can match all-ceramic crowns to match the color of your existing teeth. Because they best mimic natural teeth, all-ceramic crowns are an excellent choice for front teeth. Also, the force of your bite is lower in the front of your mouth, so there is less chance of your all-ceramic tooth chipping.

What happens during a crown placement?

When you come in for your crown placement, Dr. Barrera and his team start by preparing your tooth. First, they remove a minimal portion of your enamel so the crown won’t look out of place or shift your surrounding teeth.

Next, the team takes a mold of your teeth so that the lab can create an exact match. They also choose a shade for the crown, so it will perfectly blend in with your natural teeth.

After this, your tooth is cleaned, and a temporary crown is placed. One to two weeks later, you come back to the office for your custom-made permanent crown, which Dr. Barrera bonds to your natural tooth.

After your procedure, expect some localized pain and sensitivity for a few days. To manage it, you can take over-the-counter pain medication. If you’re anxious about your procedure, talk to your team about sedation dentistry.
