Basics of Same Day CEREC®

Have you heard the good news? For patients who need a dental crown, Same Day CEREC® has just reduced your dental appointments to a single visit. You can now walk into Arbours Aesthetic Dentistry for a dental cap and walk out with a new smile. This procedure helps save patients a lot of time and inconvenience while offering satisfying results. However, most people are still unfamiliar with CEREC and how it works.

The following is a basic outline of Same-Day CEREC® technology and procedure and its impact on cosmetic dentistry.

Definition of CEREC

CEREC® is an abbreviation for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. This essentially means that your dentist can easily and economically restore your damaged or cracked tooth in one appointment using ceramic that closely resembles your natural teeth color.

How does the CEREC® machine work?

The CEREC® instrument uses Computer-Aided Manufacturing and Computer-Aided Design technology to create a cap for the patient. The instrument comprises a computer, a camera, and a milling machine. The dentist starts by giving your teeth a light dusting of a reflective powder. He/she then uses a scanning wand attached to the computer to take digital photographs of your mouth. The computer generates a very accurate 3D model of your teeth. The process usually takes a few seconds. With the help of CAD/CAM software, the computer will design a crown while you wait. This instrument can create a perfect replica of the tooth on the other side of the mouth for uniformity and to ensure the crown looks as natural as possible. The dentist then chooses a block of dental ceramic material that closely resembles your teeth's natural color. This block is placed on the milling machine, which carves out a crown from the ceramic block based on the digital designs transmitted by the computer. This process usually takes approximately five minutes. After the dentist ascertains that the crown fits, he/she makes necessary aesthetic enhancements to it. These enhancements include staining and glazing. The dentist then bonds this dental crown to your tooth, and you can walk out of the office with fresh, new, pearly whites.

Caring for the Same Day CEREC® Crowns

After getting these same-day dental crowns, you have to take care of them religiously. Brush your teeth twice a day and floss between all your teeth, both natural and restored, at least once a day. This helps reduce the buildup of plaque. If you have these crowns, you should get regular cleanings at your dentist's office. Furthermore, never use your teeth as tools to open packages or bottles. If you suffer from bruxism and constantly grind your teeth at night, get a night guard to protect your CEREC® crowns from damage. If you take care of these dental crowns, they will enhance your smile for years. Wrapping up By eliminating a second visit to the dentist and shortening the duration of the initial visit, the Same Day CEREC® has brought quality and convenience to the lives of patients. This restoration procedure is the result of decades of research, and it has been proven to be safe, effective, and precise.
